MIAMI (Sept. 6, 2021) - David Garcia of the FIU men's soccer team has been named to
CollegeSoccerNews.com's (CSN) National Team of the Week, for the week ending in Sept. 5.
The award marks the second consecutive week that a Panther has earned national team of the week honors, after
Philip Hildebrandt graced both CSN's and TopDrawerSoccer.com's lists to open the season.Â
Garcia scored the game-winning goal this past Saturday, Sept. 4, in FIU's home opener against No. 12 VCU. The junior also played a full 90-minutes against the Rams and helped FIU post a clean sheet while allowing only one shot-on-goal.
Garcia found the back of the net during an FIU corner kick in the 73rd minute, when the Panther positioned himself well in the box to receive a shoulder pass fromÂ
Matthias Lavenant and then finished the play with a scoring strike. Garcia's stout play in the backline allowed FIU to hold the Rams to seven total shots in the contest. VCU was unable to score on FIU, despite scoring against then-ranked No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 4 UNC in the week prior.Â
