No. 13 FIU Earns Draw Against UNF

Panthers settle for stalemate against Ospreys

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Sept. 7, 2021) - The No. 13 ranked FIU men's soccer team out-shot the North Florida Ospreys by a tally of 17-7 on Tuesday night, but in the end the Panthers settled for a 1-1 draw in Jacksonville.

FIU's record now stands at 3-0-1 on the season, while UNF is 2-1-1.

After giving up their first goal of the season in the 13th minute, the Panthers answered back just before the half when Kareem Riley scored on a penalty kick. Each squad traded three shots apiece in the opening period and played stout defensively.

FIU got the ball into the attacking third with more consistency after the break, earning a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks and firing off seven shot attempts to UNF's two. In the 54th minute, FIU seemed to take the lead before a header goal by Rasmus Tobinski was negated due to an offsides ruling.

The Blue & Gold knocked on the door in the waning minutes of regulation with two corner kick opportunities in the 86th minute, and a shot on-goal by Matthias Lavenant in the 89th, but FIU was unable to convert the chances.

In overtime, the Panthers out-shot the Ospreys by a margin of 7-1 and won three corner kicks to UNF's zero. Goalkeeper Grant Makela helped stave off a dangerous Osprey shot attempt in the 94th minute, making an incredible game-saving deflection with his foot.

FIU saw a great scoring chance in the 96th minute when Hildebrandt delivered a beautiful service into the box for a streaking Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro, but a header attempt by the freshman missed the target.

Another chance arrived when Rasmus Tobinski was fouled around the penalty arc at the 108th minute, but a free kick attempt by Riley sailed high over the North Florida net. Matteo Gasperoni saw the final opportunity for FIU with 30 seconds left but was unable to connect with a shot attempt from close range.

Riley scored his first goal of the season for FIU in the contest. David Garcia, Hildebrandt, Riley, and Makela all recorded a full 110-minutes in the match.
