Women's Soccer Wraps Season with Dominant 3-0 Victory over Middle Tennessee

Panthers exceed last season’s win total and record most goals as a team since 2015.

MIAMI, Fla. -  The FIU women's soccer team concluded the 2022 season on a strong note on Saturday evening after securing a 3-0 victory over Middle Tennessee at FIU Soccer Stadium to exceed last season's win total and defend its home pitch to finish the year.

The Panthers finish the season 3-8-4 and 1-5-4 in the Conference USA to finish ninth overall, while Middle Tennessee finishes 11th with a 2-12-3 overall record and 0-8-2 league mark.

FIU's 3-0 win marks the first time the Panthers have blanked an opponent while recording at least three goals since a 3-0 win at USC Upstate on Sept. 15, 2019.

A trio of different Panthers scored on the evening, as freshman forward Brealyn Viamille poured in her first career goal in her first career start, followed by goals from Nikole Solis and Noemi Paquin, in addition to an assist from senior Sydney Amparo.

Solis finishes the 2022 campaign as the Panthers' points (14) and goals (7) leader, as Solis' seven goals on the season mark the most a Panther has recorded since 2014 (Chelsea Leiva, 8).

Paquin follows behind Solis as the squad's second leading point holder with seven behind two goals and three assists, followed by junior Dominique Marcelli (1 G, 2 A) and freshmen Catherine Rapp (2 G) and Kim Schneider (2 G) with four points apiece.

Maaike van Klink finished with four saves in goal to notch her second clean sheet and first career win for the Panthers with a 1-3-2 overall mark for the season, while posting an impressive .800 save percentage with 28 saves through five starts.

Defensively, the Panthers were sound across the board, though, significant contributions were felt from Reagan Bridges, Hanako Fujii, Dominique Marcelli and Idelys Vazquez with full 90-minute efforts.

Viamille wasted no time putting the Panthers on the board to start the match, as the Evanston, Illinois, native buried a clean look that nicked off a MTSU defender from a Paquin cross in just the second minute to grab an early lead.

FIU dominated possession in the first half, seeing solid chances from Kim Schneider and Nikole Solis that would come off the mark, while van Klink easily defended MTSU's lone shot on goal for the first half to head into the intermission with a 1-0 advantage.

Out the break, the Blue Raiders began to ramp up its activity, though, the Panthers found a break that allowed Nikole Solis to receive a beautiful ball in MTSU's third, as Solis would hold off several MTSU defenders prior to dodging MTSU's keeper in the box to double FIU's advantage with a 2-0 lead in the 58th.

MTSU picked up its urgency in slotting three solid shots on target down the stretch, though, van Klink would handle each with ease, as the Panthers sealed the deal late in the 84th after Paquin and Amparo played off each other en route to Amparo feeding Paquin for a shot that lofted over the keeper to notch the 3-0 victory by the final horn.

The 2022 campaign for head coach Jonathan Garbar's young Panther squad certainly showed improvement, as FIU recorded 16 goals as a team for the season – which marked its most in a season since 2015 (21).
