Cold Night Plagues FIU in 71-59 Loss at Howard

Denver Jones led FIU with 21 points and three steals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Denver Jones led FIU with 21 points on Tuesday night, though, the FIU men's basketball team slipped in a nonconference tilt at Howard (5-8) on Tuesday night, 71-59, inside Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. Sophomore guard Petar Krivokapic recorded a season-high 13 points in the loss, as the Panthers drop to 4-5 overall on the season.
 
The Panthers' shooting woes continue, suffering from another cold night from the field on 35.4 percent shooting (23-for-65), including just 7-of-25 from beyond the arc (28.0%) and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line (60.0%).
 
Jones added his fourth 20-point contest of the season to pace FIU on 9-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-5 from distance,while recording three steals and two rebounds. Krivokapic matched a season-best three 3-pointers on the night (3-for-7), while adding season-highs of five rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes off the bench.
 
Freshman Arturo Dean added eight points, six rebounds and two steals, followed by junior Javaunte Hawkins with five points and four rebounds.
 
The Bison finished with the edge in points inside the paint, 36-32, seeing Howard finish the contest 44.8 percent from the field (26-of-58) while burying eight 3-pointers at a 40.0 percent clip for the night (8-of-20). Additionally, the Bison finished 11-of-15 at the line (73.3%).
 
Four Bison finished in double figures, led by Jordan Wood with 15 points, followed by Steve Settle (14), Shy Odom (14) and Elijah Hawkins (13).
 
FIU's 59 points marked a season-low for the Panthers, as Howard forced 19 turnovers in return for 21 points throughout the night.
 
Additionally, Howard finished with a 41-37 edge on the boards for the game, corralling 13 second chance points during pivotal stretches.
