MIAMI – FIU Athletics is pleased to announce the principal gift to enhance the tennis complex facility, thanks to the generosity of PayCargo, LLC, who helped make this project a reality.
The project will completely renovate six lighted tennis courts to competition level and include spectator seating areas outfitted with canopies, new fencing and FIU branded windscreens.
Eduardo Del Riego, a proud alum ('82), and a champion of FIU Athletics, is the Chief Executive Officer for PayCargo – an online overnight payment system that supports shippers and carriers in the global freight industry. PayCargo, LLC, provided this generous gift to not only enhance the tennis facility, but to also make an impact on the lives of our women's tennis student-athletes on and off the court.
"It's a very exciting day in FIU Athletics history," FIU Athletics Director
Scott Carr said. "I can't thank Eduardo and Lili Del Riego and PayCargo enough for their generous support. Coach Petrovic and our tremendous student-athletes have built FIU Women's Tennis into a national power. Our new PayCargo Tennis Center will ensure continued success. It's a great day to be a Panther! Paws Up!"
"It is an honor to partner with FIU," Eduardo Del Riego, CEO PayCargo LLC said. "We share a joint commitment to the continued success of the student athletes, and the advancement of the school in our community."
"Facility upgrades are important to our team, but the impact and generosity of PayCargo is life changing for FIU Athletics," FIU Senior Associate Athletic Director and SWA
Julie Berg said. "This enhanced tennis center will enable us to have one of the best tennis facilities in our conference. These facility upgrades will help our coaching staff attract and recruit the top student-athletes to FIU. The gift from PayCargo will be transformational for our program and university. Our gratitude is boundless!"
The tennis complex will feature the renovation of six courts to meet top competition standards, allowing the FIU women's tennis program the ability to host postseason events including conference and NCAA Championships. The complex will include a total of 12 competition courts once it is completed.
"The completion of this facility will elevate the program to new heights in so many different facets," FIU women's tennis head coach
Katarina Petrovic said. "From recruiting to an increased ability to coach numerous student-athletes simultaneously due to the improved layout of the courts, this facility will greatly enhance the experience for anyone involved in our program."
The FIU women's tennis program is fresh off the 10th NCAA Championship berth in program history and its second since 2018. The Panthers return a total of five players from last season's squad, which finished the year with an overall mark of 12-2 overall.
The 2021-22 squad features a total of four newcomers and personifies FIU's reputation as one of the truly global universities nationally with student-athletes from a total of eight different countries, including France, Serbia, Morocco, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Romania and the United States.
"This venue will also generate an increased level in our fan experience as well as the ability to host postseason events. We could not be more grateful for the generosity displayed by PayCargo, LLC. Without their gift, none of that would be possible," Petrovic added.
