MIAMI (Feb. 5, 2022) – The FIU women's basketball team was handed a tough result on Saturday afternoon, falling to LA Tech on the road by a score of 62-81.
FIU's record dropped to 11-9 overall (3-6 Conference USA), while LA Tech improved 13-8 (5-5 C-USA).
The Panthers were led by
Kyla Nelson in scoring, who tallied 17 points to go along with eight rebounds. Nelson also knocked down four treys in the contest and is now only two away from reaching 200 career 3-pointers.
Grace Hunter tallied 13 points off the bench and has now scored in double figures for six-straight games.
FIU forced 14 turnovers and scored 17 points off the LA Tech mishaps, while also collecting 15 points on the fastbreak.
After falling behind 10-18 to close out the first quarter, the Panthers battled the Lady Techsters more closely in the second period. FIU got within six points of LA Tech after a 9-2 run in the second frame, but the Lady Techsters pulled away and took a 40-27 lead into the locker room.
Nelson led the Panthers with 13 points before the break.
The third quarter saw the Lady Techsters shoot over 69 percent from the field as the Panthers fought to stay within reach.
FIU saw its highest scoring quarter in the fourth, outdueling LA Tech by a margin of 22-16. The Blue & Gold went 10-15 from the free-throw line in the final frame and outrebounded LA Tech 13-4, but the efforts were not enough as FIU fell in the end to a tough C-USA foe.
Emerald Ekpiteta grabbed eight boards in the contest, while
Tanajah Hayes tallied four assists.

FIU wraps up its three-game road trip on Monday, Feb. 7, against Old Dominion. Tip-off against the Monarchs is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET from Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
