MIAMI – The FIU women's tennis team will begin postseason action as the No. 2 seed at the 2022 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship on Friday, April 22 at 11 a.m. ET in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on the campus of Middle Tennessee State.

The Panthers, who received a bye to the quarterfinal round, will face the winner of the opening round match between No. 7 seed Louisiana Tech and No. 10 seed North Texas, which is slated for Thursday, April 21 at 10 a.m. ET.
With a victory, FIU would advance to the semifinal round on Saturday, April 23 (1 p.m. ET) with the winners squaring off for the 2022 Conference USA Championship on Sunday, April 24 beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
The Panthers enter the conference championship having won each of their last five dual matches and 14 of their last 15 overall. FIU defeated North Texas on the road by a 4-1 margin on Feb. 27. The Panthers did not face Louisiana Tech during the regular season.
FIU last claimed the Conference USA tournament crown during the 2019 campaign – when it defeated Rice by a 4-3 margin. The Panthers also advanced to the championship match in both 2017 and 2018.
In singles action the Panthers have been led by a group that includes freshman
Yasmine Kabbaj (No. 1), senior
Kamila Umarova (No. 2), sophomore
Andjela Skrobonja (No. 3), junior
Kristina Miletic (No. 4), sophomore
Andreea Velcea (No. 5) and senior
Basak Akbas (No. 6).
Kabbaj, who is ranked No. 116 nationally among singles players in the most recent ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, has posted a 17-5 overall mark in singles action while playing in the No. 1 position. Kabbaj has won each of her last 11 dual matches entering postseason play.
Umarova has won each of her last 15 singles clashes entering Friday's quarterfinal round C-USA match. She has also paired up with Skrobonja to tally a 13-4 record at the No. 1 doubles slot. The duo has won nine of their last 10 matches overall and are ranked as the nation's No. 78 doubles tandem.
As a team, FIU is ranked No. 40 in the most recent ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The Panthers posted a 16-3 mark in regular-season dual matches, including a 3-0 ledger against league foes.
UP NEXT
With a victory in Friday's quarterfinal match, FIU will advance to Saturday's semifinal round where it will play at 1 p.m. ET against an opponent to be determined.
