MIAMI – FIU women's tennis standout Yasmine Kabbaj has been honored as the 2022 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, league officials announced Monday.

She is the second FIU women's tennis student-athlete to receive the C-USA Freshman of the Year Award – following Maryna Veksler, who captured the honor in 2016.

Kabbaj, along with senior teammate Kamila Umarova, were also recognized with All-Conference USA Singles second team status, while Umarova and Andjela Skrobonja were named to the All-Conference USA Doubles First Team.

Kabbaj was also listed on the All-Conference USA Freshmen Team.

Nationally ranked for a majority of the season, most recently at No. 116, Kabbaj posted an overall record of 19-5 in singles play, including a 13-1 mark while playing in the No. 1 singles position.

Kabbaj won each of her last 13 singles matches and 11 of those 13 victories came in straight sets.  She currently boasts an overall singles mark of 19-5 and is 13-1 while playing in the No. 1 position.

She defeated the currently ranked No. 72 singles player, University of Florida's Marlee Zein in straight sets and No. 106, UCF's Evgeniya Levashova, also in straight sets.  She also recorded a straight set win over ETSU's Laylo Bakhodirova, who is currently slotted No. 117 among singles players nationally.

Umarova closed out the season with 17 consecutive singles wins while posting a 15-0 record while playing at the No. 2 position and 2-0 in the No. 1 slot.

Currently holds an overall mark of 20-2 in singles action, with her only two defeats coming during fall tournament action.  Umarova has not been defeated in singles play since Oct. 29 and boasts over 50 wins in her FIU career.

This is the third consecutive season she is being recognized with league honors after earning first team Conference USA status in both 2020 and 2021.

She has won nearly 80 percent of the singles matches and over 66 percent of the doubles matches in her career.

Nationally ranked for the majority of the season and as high as the No. 62, the doubles tandem of Skrobonja and Umarova posted an overall record of 14-5 in the No. 1 position and tabbed victories in 10 of their most recent 12 matches overall.

The pair's other two losses came in the opening two dual matches of the season against nationally-ranked Florida and Illinois.

Umarova and Skrobonja have defeated the current doubles tandems that are currently ranked nationally at No. 33 (UCF) and No. 85 (North Texas).  Were previously named as the top doubles pair of the 2021 C-USA Championship.

The FIU women's tennis team is currently ranked No. 41 overall nationally and is in play for an at-large bid to the 2022 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.  The 2022 NCAA Women's Tennis Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
