No. 41 FIU Women’s Tennis Battles No. 35 Florida State to the Brink in NCAA Opening Round

Panthers fall 4-2 in match that saw four-of-six singles matches pushed to three sets or tiebreaker

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 41 ranked FIU women's tennis team gave No. 35 Florida State all it could handle in a 4-2 loss in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville.
 
The match saw four of the six matches pushed to a third set and each of the three doubles clashes were decided by two points or less.
 
The Panthers, who were making their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 11th in program history, fell behind in doubles play after freshman Yasmine Kabbaj and Ines Bekrar were defeated 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.
 
FIU tied it up at one match a side after the tandem of Kristina Miletic and Basak Akbas tabbed a 7-5 win at No. 2, but the Seminoles escaped with the point after posting a 7-6 (7-2) win over Kamila Umarova and Andjela Skrobonja in the top slot.
 
Singles play saw more tight play after each team posted a straight set victory with FIU's Skrobonja and FSU's Kianah Motosono recording wins at No. 3 and No. 5.  Miletic then tied the overall score for the Panthers at 2-2 with another straight set win that saw the opening set decided by tiebreaker before finishing 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
 
Freshman Kabbaj took the opening set from the No. 3 ranked singles player nationally, FSU's Petra Hule, before falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.  FSU's Olympe Lancelot closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 over FIU's Bekrar.
