SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The FIU softball team closed out the regular season with a 6-4 win at UTSA on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the weekend series and the regular season.
The Panthers took control early by opening a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and one in the third.
Carmen Perez scored on a groundout by
Brittany Phillips and Gabby Ruiz scored on a error by UTSA second baseman Kaitlyn Morado in the second.
Junior
Madison Lewis drove home
Alexis Ross with an RBI single in the second to increase the advantage to 3-0.
UTSA added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third on a sacrifice fly and an error by FIU to trim the deficit to 3-2.
FIU tacked on two more runs in the fifth on the strength of a single to left by Ruiz coupled with an error by UTSA that allowed Perez and
Alyssa Laboy to score and up the score to 5-2.
UTSA used a couple of solo home runs by Camryn Robillard and Marena Estell in the bottom of the fifth to get within 5-4, but the Panthers would respond with a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Lewis to close out the game's scoring and cap the victory.
FIU starter
Kendahl Dunford (7-15) tabbed the win with her 16
th complete game that saw her limit the Roadrunners to four runs, three of which were earned and six hits over seven innings. She struck out five and walked three.
The win moves the Panthers' record to 19-31 overall and 5-19 in the C-USA action. UTSA drops to 18-29 on the season and 11-12 in league action.
