FIU Men's Hoops Snaps Skid with Big C-USA Road Win at UTSA

Panthers led for 39:21 en route to first C-USA road victory

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The FIU men's basketball team collected a pivotal bounce back win at UTSA on Saturday afternoon, snapping a four-game skid to collect its first league road win, 77-72, inside the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas. FIU held the Roadrunners (7-14, 1-9 C-USA) to 37.3 percent shooting from the field and 25.8 percent from beyond the arc to move to 9-11 and 3-6 in the Conference USA.
 
The Panthers led for 39:21 of the contest with leads as big as 18 points en route to its first road win of the season, led by sophomore guard Denver Jones with a game-high 27 points – his 10th 20-point game this season – including a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.
 
Classmate Petar Krivokapic tallied 14 points, behind four first-half threes (4-of-7), five rebounds and an assist and steal, followed by freshman Dashon Gittens with 12 points, including two 3-pointers (2-of-4), two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
 
Javaunte Hawkins and Mohamed Sanogo added six points each, while Sanogo recorded seven rebounds and two blocks.
 
FIU recorded a season-low six turnovers for the contest, while finishing 43.1 percent from the field and hitting 11-of-33 from beyond the arc (33.3%).
 
Additionally, the Panthers handled business from the stripe down the stretch, hitting 10-of-11 for the contest (90.9%).
 
The Panthers also capitalized in transition, tallying 18 fast break points to UTSA's eight for the game.
 
UTSA was led by Jacob Germany with 19 points and 13 rebounds, followed by DJ Richards with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
 
UP NEXT
FIU returns home to host Western Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 26, inside the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. Tip-off is slated for a 7 p.m. start to be broadcast on ESPN+.
