MIAMI, Fla. – Florida International University will welcome over 1,000 elementary school students from Miami-Dade County schools to take part in STEAM-Weather Day at Modesto Maidique Campus this Thursday, Feb. 2.

The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. ET at the main entry plaza in front of the Ocean Bank Convocation Center and will feature interactive exhibits and demonstrations from organizations in the STEAM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics).

Students will then attend an FIU women's basketball game against the University of Charlotte at 11 a.m. ET.

Some of the organizations that will be in attendance are FIU Wall of Wind, National Weather Service, National Hurricane Center, Channel 4 News, Telemundo and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.

"FIU STEAM-Weather Day is an opportunity to promote STEM career fields," Erik Salna, Associate Director for Education and Outreach with the FIU International Hurricane Research Center in the Extreme Events Institute said. "The day focuses on STEAM education, through interactive, hands-on, fun activities and demonstrations and showcases FIU's research expertise and community partners."

There will also be a large FIU presence prior to tipoff that includes meteorology and engineering students, the Institute of Environment/Sea Level Solutions Center, College of Arts, Sciences & Education – Education & Outreach and the FIU FAST (Florida Advanced Surgical Transport) Team.

Select news outlets will be in attendance with local meteorologists assisting students and providing the opportunity to work with a green screen and become a TV weathercaster for the day.

Students can also learn about emergency management techniques with Miami Dade Fire Rescue and proper hurricane preparation from the National Hurricane Center exhibit.

STEAM-Weather Day combines education in a fun environment. There is something for every student to be interested in whether they are into science or sports. The goal is to inspire and expand their minds while creating a lasting memory.
