Men’s Basketball Falls in Final Seconds to Loyola Marymount to Close Out Cayman Islands Classic

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — FIU's men's basketball team fell to Loyola Marymount 61-60 on Tuesday afternoon to conclude its time at the Cayman Islands Classic.

The Panthers (1-6) trailed by 11 at the break before a second-half surge put FIU up 60-57 with 1:01 remaining. Dashon Gittens played a major factor in the final 20 minutes, scoring 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. 

LMU (3-3) then knocked down two free three throws with 46 seconds to go to cut the lead to one. Following an FIU turnover, the Lions' Justin Wright made a jump shot in the lane with four seconds to go to finish off the result. 

Jonathan Aybar made the go-ahead bucket for the Panthers late and finished with 11 points and four rebounds in 28 minutes. Arturo Dean was also in double-figures with 10 points, adding four assists and four steals. 

Seth Pinkney led the rebounding effort with five rebounds, adding seven points, three assists and one block. Both teams struggled shooting in the contest as FIU shot 42.2 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from three compared to LMU's 39.6 percent and 21.1 percent from deep. The Lions shot 22 free throws and made 19 while FIU only had six attempts and three makes. 

Following the game, Petar Krivokapic was named to the Cayman Islands Classic All-Tournament Team. Krivokapic scored a career-high 26 points in FIU's defeat to Akron in the opening round. 

The Panthers, who upon return will be in the State of Florida until Dec. 30, host Kennesaw State on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. inside the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
