Men’s Basketball’s Dean Sets School Record with 10 Steals in Loss to FGCU

MIAMI — FIU men's basketball's Arturo Dean cemented his name in the Panther record book on Wednesday evening with 10 steals in a 68-65 defeat to FGCU.

Dean recorded nine steals in the first half alone, surpassing Carlos' Morban's previous record of seven from February 9, 2002. The Panthers got off to a fast start with a 44-29 halftime lead, but a 16-1 run for the Eagles in the second half fueled FGCU to victory.

Head Coach Jeremy Ballard remains one win shy of overtaking the top spot for most wins in FIU Men's Basketball history.

The Panthers had four scorers in double-digits as Dean recorded a 13-point, 10-steal double-double, the first of the season for FIU. Jayden Brewer scored a team-high 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting.

Javaunte Hawkins knocked down four threes and finished with 14 points. Jonathan Aybar scored 10 points on 2-of-3 shooting from deep.

FIU shot 58.1 percent from the field and 5-for-11 from distance in the first half while holding FGCU to 2-for-10 from deep. The Eagles then made six second-half threes, four of which came during their push to take the lead.

The Panthers were down by six, but fought back to bring the game within one possession down the stretch. After FIU forced a turnover on FGCU's last possession, Hawkins and then Dashon Gittens both had chances at game-tying three-pointers at the buzzer.

FIU will take on LIU on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. in its final game before an 11-day break from competition.
