Swim and Dive Dominates Day Three of The American Championships

Panthers won gold in all three events

DALLAS, Texas (Feb. 15, 2022) – Swimming and Diving won gold in all three events of day three of the American Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday.
 
Maha Gouda won gold and set a The American Championship record with her 296.10 in the platform dive.
 
The relay teams dominated the day winning the 200-medley (1.37.64) and the 800-freestyle (7.10.86).
 
The day started with a stellar performance by the divers in the platform dive perlims, freshman Ruska Lehtonen (241) finished third, senior Raquel Mason (240.55) took fourth and Gouda (239.75) finished sixth.
 
The first race of The American Championship followed with the 200-medley relay. The team of senior Kelsie Campbell, sophomore Christie Chue, freshman Oumy Diop and freshman Jessica Shpilko took gold with a great time of 1:37.64.
 
The divers continued their strong showing in the platform finals. Lethonen scored a 237.45 and finished fourth overall. Gouda took gold with a record-breaking 296.10.
 
The 800-freestyle relay closed out day three with the team of freshman Harliai Curthoys-Davies, Chue, senior Mia Zahab and freshman Var Eidesgaard competing for the Panthers. The first half of the race saw FIU firmly in the top three. As the second half unfolded, the Panthers caught up to the leaders and eventually pulled away for a gold medal time of 7:10.86.
 
In all, the Panthers scored 219 points on the day to raise the team total to 340, good for second place overall.
 
UP NEXT
FIU is back in action tomorrow for an action-packed day four. On the docket are the 500-free, 200-individual medley, 50-free and 200-free relay. Prelims start at 11 a.m. with the finals set for 7 p.m. Fans can watch all the action live on ESPN+.
