Swim and Dive Wins Three Medals at Day Four of The American Championships

Panthers hold on to second place with 581 total points

DALLAS, Texas (Feb. 16, 2022) – Swimming and Diving performed well at day four of the American Athletic Conference on Thursday, earning three more medals and winning the 200-individual medley.
 
Sophomore Christie Chue (1:58.40) took gold in the 200-individual medley with senior Mia Zahab (1:58.86) finishing second in the race. Sophomore Jessica Shpilko (22.85) won bronze in the 50-free.
 
The Panthers had an excellent prelim with six swimmers making it to the finals.
 
In the 500-free, freshman Harliai Curthoys-Davies finished eighth (4:53.46) in the prelims and would go on to finish seventh (4:50.21) in the finals scoring 23 points for the Panthers.
 
FIU dominated the 200-individual medley prelims. Freshman Nicole Frank posted the top time with a 1.59.54. Chue (2:00.41) would finish second and Zahab (2:01.82) in eighth.
 
In the finals, Chue took home gold, her second-consecutive conference championship in the 200-IM, and Zahab came away with silver. The duo added 60 points to FIU's overall score.
 
Shpilko and graduate student Kelsie Campbell made the 50-free finals finishing in first (22.67) and sixth (23.08), respectively. In the finals, Shpilko made the podium with a bronze medal finish and 26 points for the Panthers. Campbell placed fifth and earned 25 points.
 
The 200-free relay team of Shpilko, Campbell, freshman Oumy Diop and senior Lamija Medosevic just missed a podium place by .12, finishing fourth and scoring 52 points.
 
The Panthers had five other swimmers score team points, adding 34 to FIU's total.
 
At the end of the night FIU's point total rose to 581, good for second place.

FIU is back in action tomorrow for a busy day five with six races on the schedule. Prelims start at 11 a.m. with the finals set for 7 p.m. Fans can watch all the action live on ESPN+.
