Swim and Dive Takes Second at First American Athletic Conference Championships

Panthers scored 1300 points over the six-day competition

DALLAS, Texas (Feb. 18, 2022) – Swimming and Diving's run at the American Athletic Conference came to a close Saturday, with the Panthers finishing second overall with a score of 1,300.
 
FIU collected 14 total medals at the conference championships with eight golds, four silvers and two bronzes.
 
Sophomore Christie Chue was the Panthers' lead medal winners collecting seven. Graduate student Maha Gouda medaled in two of three diving competitions, placing second in the 3-meter and taking gold in the platform competition.
 
FIU's relay teams dominated the competition winning four of five races over the six-day competition.
 
Freshman Nicole Frank was named the Women's Swimming and Diving Freshman of the Year.
 
The Panthers made a strong push on the final day of The American Championships winning two more golds and sweeping the podium, and taking fourth, in the 200-breast.
 
The Panthers delivered in prelims once again sending 10 total swimmers into the finals.
 
Freshman Harliai Curthoys-Davies closed out her individual races scoring 26 points with a fourth-place finish in the 100-freestyle (49.73), missing the podium by just .22.

Graduate student Kelsie Campbell (49.80) and sophomore Jessica Shpilko (50.36) added 47 points from the race with sixth and seventh place finishes, respectively.
 
FIU would go on to sweep first through fourth in the 200-breast. Chue took the top sport with a 2:08.73, setting a new pool record, Frank placed second with a 2:10.46, freshman Ingrid Huszar finished in third with a 2:12.00 and senior Delaine Goll rounded out in fourth with a 2:12.33.

Junior Ellie Maradyn (2:15.49) also captured eighth, bring the team point total to 135 for the race.
 
The American Championships ended with the 400-free relay and another FIU gold. Chue, Curthoys-Davies, Shpilko and Campbell record a 3:17.99 to bring the Panthers point total to 1,300, good for second place overall.
