Softball Drops Season Opener to No. 10 Clemson

Sophomore Ashton Lansdell blasts first career homer in loss

MIAMI – Sophomore Ashton Lansdell smashed the first home run of her career in a 10-1 setback against No. 10 Clemson on Thursday evening in the opening night of the Felsberg Invitational at FIU Softball Stadium.
 
Lansdell, who was competing in her first-ever softball game after playing baseball her entire athletic career, launched a shot over the center field fence to put the Panthers on the board in the bottom of the third – after they fell behind by a 6-0 margin over the opening two innings.
 
Clemson hit a total of four round trippers in the contest that led to a total of five runs.  The Tigers posted four runs in the top of the first and added a pair in the second to open an early 6-0 advantage.  Back-to-back homers by Valerie Cagle and Caroline Jacobson in the fifth secured the victory for Clemson.
 
In addition to Lansdell's homer, Makayla Navarro, Alexis Ross and Bailey Grossenbacher each recorded a hit for the Panthers.
 
Mille Thompson (1-0) earned the win for Clemson after limiting the Panthers to three hits and one run over three innings.  She struck out two and walked two.  Ella Whitney (0-1) took the loss for FIU.  She allowed six runs and seven hits over two innings of work.
 
Junior Sydney Birling and freshman Megan Kruger entered the circle in relief for the Panthers – both seeing their first action since joining FIU.
 
The Panthers continue play on their home diamond in the Felsberg Invitational on Friday, Feb. 10 when they battle Kansas City in a contest slated for a 5:30 p.m. ET first pitch at FIU Softball Stadium.
 
The game will be streamed on Conference USA TV.
