Softball Splits Tuesday Twinbill with Holy Cross

Panthers post 6-2 win in opener before falling 1-0 in game two

MIAMI - Freshman Isabella Perez drove in a pair of runs with a key double and scored the go-ahead run to help guide the FIU softball team to a 6-2 win in the opening game of a doubleheader against Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon.

The win marked the third in the last four games overall for the Panthers, who currently stand 13-11 overall and will begin Conference USA play this weekend with their first true road contests of the season in a three-game set at Charlotte, beginning Friday, March 10.

The Panthers dropped game two by a 1-0 margin as FIU was limited to three hits in the loss.

The Panthers matched a season-high with six steals in the win over Holy Cross.  Sophomore Ashton Lansdell improved to a perfect 18-of-18 on the year with three steals over the two games and was joined by six teammates who each swiped a bag over the two games.

Carmen Perez allowed the Panthers to jump out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double to center that plated Lansdell.

Holy Cross (4-9) moved ahead 2-1 on a solo homer in the second by Ali Sniegocki and a run-scoring single from Claire McCann in the third.

The Panthers claimed the lead for good on the strength of two runs in the third that crossed on wild pitches.  Frankie Izard scampered home to tie that game at 2-2, before Isabella Perez scored the eventual winning run shortly after on a second errant pitch to make the score 3-2.

Isabella Perez gave the Panthers a pair of insurance runs with a two-RBI double in the fourth.  Logan Turner drove in the final tally of the contest for FIU with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Junior Sydney Birling (2-4) logged the win for FIU after allowing two runs and two hits over five innings.  Freshman Brooke McNichols held the Crusaders scoreless and hitless over the final two innings in relief.
