EL PASO, Texas – FIU senior
Madison Lewis launched a three-run homer for the go-ahead and eventual winning run in a 6-5 win for the FIU softball team over UTEP in the final game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon.
The victory clinched a series sweep for the Panthers, who will now begin play as the No. 8 seed at the 2023 Conference USA Softball Championship beginning on Wednesday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. ET vs. No. 5 seed Western Kentucky.
Lewis' three-run blast erased a 5-3 deficit faced by the Panthers after the Miners opened up a 5-3 advantage following a four-run third and a one-run fourth.
FIU (24-26, 10-14 CUSA) claimed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the third when freshman
Ella Whitney launched the Panthers' first three-run homer of the contest and her second round-tripper in as many days. The blast drove home
Ashton Lansdell and
Lindsey Burroughs.
Junior
Sydney Birling (7-6) earned the win in relief for the Panthers after going 3.2 scoreless frames and limiting the Miners to two hits and a walk. She fanned a pair.
Kaylee Hewitt (2-5) was tagged with the loss for UTEP. She allowed three runs and three hits over 1.1 innings of relief.

The Panthers open the postseason on Wednesday, May 10 at the 2023 Conference USA Championship in Ruston, La.
No. 8 seed FIU will face No. 5 seed Western Kentucky in the opening round on Wednesday, May 10 beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET.
All games at the 2023 Conference USA Championship will be aired on either CUSA.TV (Wednesday) or ESPN+ (Thursday-Saturday).
