MIAMI — FIU's men's basketball program fell 75-70 to Howard in a back-and-forth contest at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Monday night.
The Panthers (1-3) and Bison (3-2) were tied 35-35 at halftime, but Howard built a 10-point advantage with 11:49 to go. FIU fought back, tying the score at 57-all on a layup by Ashton Williamson.
Down by one with 1:11 to go, the Bison converted a sidelines inbound play for a layup to go up three and held off the Panthers down the stretch. Dashon Gittens missed a game-tying three with four seconds left and Howard added two free throws for its five-point win.
Jayden Brewer led FIU with 15 points, adding four rebounds and two assists. Asim Jones and Travis Gray were also in double-digits with 12 points each.
Williamson stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds in 30 minutes. Jonathan Aybar had eight points and four rebounds in 22 minutes.
As a team, the Panthers shot just 5-for-29 from distance on the night.
