MIAMI – Three FIU swimmers wrapped up competition Sunday morning competing in the CSCAA College National Open Water Championship hosted at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus.
240 athletes from 60 different schools swam a 5k in Biscayne Bay. The men's race featured 95 swimmers while the women's race saw 108 competitors.
"This is not just great exposure for our program, but for the university," head coach
Randy Horner stated. "Knowing FIU has this beautiful campus [Biscayne Bay Campus} right here on the waterfront and having this many universities come is great overall."
In the 5K Race, junior
Harliai Curthoys-Davies, sophomore
Sophie Kiryk, and junior
Gabrielle Puryear-Lynch represented the Panthers.
Curthoys-Davies was FIU's top finisher, crossing the finish line in 1:12:02.06, good for 64
th place.
"We had a lot of great competitors, and it was a super fun race so I was very glad to be here," Curthoys-Davies said.
Kiryk finished the six-lap course 1:12:08.31 for 66
th and Puryear-Lynch placed 76
th for a time of 1:14:03.39.
In the women's competition Rice University's Ella Dyson took first place with a 1:03:31.40 with the Owls also capturing the team championship seeing all four swimmers finishing in the top 10.
Ben Wainman of Saginaw Valley State University won the men's competition with a time of 1:00:41.97 and South Carolina won the team competition with three swimmers in the top 15.

The Panthers then roll into meet action on Monday, Dec. 16, taking on the Marshall Thundering Herd at 4 p.m. from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center
