GREENVILLE, N.C. — FIU's men's basketball program suffered a 75-64 setback on the road at East Carolina on Tuesday evening.
The Panthers (4-7) trailed the Pirates (8-4) 35-29 after the opening 20 minutes before a surge to start the second half. Dashon Gittens knocked down a three-pointer with 14:32 to go to tie the score at 44-all.
ECU regained its advantage as the second half progressed, using a 15-5 run to gain control of the game in the latter stages. FIU traded baskets with the Pirates in the final three minutes, but ECU maintained its double-digit lead to the finish line for an 11-point win.
Jayden Brewer led the scoring effort the Panthers with 20 points, adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jonathan Aybar scored 16 points in support, his most as a Panther, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Asim Jones scored in double-digits for the fourth time this season, finishing with 13 points while adding four assists in 32 minutes.
As a team, FIU shot 46.4 percent from the field and went 5-for-16 from three. The Panthers held ECU to 48.3 shooting and 6-for-22 from three. East Carolina was able to capitalize at the free throw line, making 13-of-15, while FIU shot just 38.9 percent (7-for-18).
