Softball Dominates Stetson in 12-0 Five-Inning Victory

Senior Bailey Grossenbacher rocks sixth homer of season, tabs three RBI, throws out runner at plate

DELAND, Fla. – Senior Bailey Grossenbacher ripped her sixth home run of the season, recorded three RBI and threw out a runner at home from right field to help lead the FIU softball team to a convincing 12-0 victory in five innings over Stetson on Wednesday afternoon.

The Panthers scored early and often to seize control.  FIU saw each of the first three hitters of the contest reach base in the top of the first – before all three scored without the benefit of a hit.  Casey Goguts then added an RBI single to plate Grossenbacher to make the lead 4-0 after a half inning.

Grossenbacher extended the lead to 6-0 in the top of the third with her team-leading sixth homer of the season – a shot to deep right center that scored Ashton Lansdell.

The Panthers added six more runs in the top of the fourth to seal the win.  Kally Meredith plated the first two runs with a single to right before Lansdell brought home two more with a single to right center.  Isabella Perez added a run-scoring double and Goguts drove in her second run of the contest on an infield base hit.

Meredith finished with a pair of hits, two runs and two RBI in the victory.  The freshman now has a hit in 15 of her last 16 games and has recorded 10 multiple hit games over that stretch.

FIU finished with 13 hits – and had a total of four players post two hits.  Five players registered two RBI or more, led by Grossenbacher's three.

The 12 runs scored by the Panthers marked their most since tabbing 12 previously this season in a win over Stony Brook on Feb. 10.

FIU starter Alina Varga (5-7) picked up the win after tossing four shutout innings and limiting the Hatters to just three hits.  Senior Sydney Birling tossed the final inning without allowing a hit or run.
