JACKSONVILLE, Ala -The FIU baseball team stormed back on Sunday afternoon, scoring eight unanswered runs to take the series finale over Jacksonville State in a 13-10 win in 11 innings on the road.
FIU earned their seventh win in Conference USA play and their 16
th win of the season. In addition, the victory this afternoon is the team's eighth come from behind victory.
Trailing 10-5 heading into the top of the eighth, the Panthers put up a five spot in the inning, sending the ballgame into extras for a second straight day.
Armando Becerra started the comeback with a RBI single before
Hector Candelas provided a two-run single cutting the deficit to two. After
Alex Ulloa grounded to first base that brought home Becerra,
Ryne Guida tied the game up after reaching first on a throwing error.
In the 11
th,
Kishon Frett added with the go-ahead run on a RBI single to centerfield.
Adrian Figueroa tacked on insurance with a two-run double down the left field line, stretching the lead to three.
Kevin Martin (2-0) fired off four scoreless innings with no hits and three strikeouts to fight off the Gamecocks, earning his second win of the year.
FIU took the first lead of the afternoon as Guida singled into left-center that brought home
Brylan West.
Jacksonville State scored seven runs combined in the first two innings, highlighted by a grand slam in the first inning. The Panthers tried to fight their way back as in the second as
Austin Dearing scored
Matthew Corpas on a sacrifice fly. Dearing then drove home a pair of runs on a single in the fourth, making it a 7-5 ballgame.
In the seventh, the Gamecocks countered with a three-run homer, stretching their lead to five, yet the Panthers eventually rallied back for the win.
Offensively, FIU logged 13 hits as a ballclub, which marks it as the 14
th game with 10+ hits as a team. Every starter on the afternoon got on base, while seven players logged hits. Guida,
Jeff Liquori, and West all notched multi-hit efforts highlighted by Guida extending his on-base streak to 16 games.
Logan Runde threw 4.1 innings for his second appearance of the weekend, giving up three earned runs with three strikeouts. Lefty
Zac Lampton gave up one earned run over two innings.
