DES MOINES, Iowa – The FIU baseball program took the series opener against the Iowa Hawkeyes Thursday night in a 2-1 decision from Principal Park.
It marks the first win for FIU against a Big 10 school since Feb. 16, 2014 in a 5-4 victory over Rutgers in Miami. In addition, it is the fourth Power Five win of the season for FIU including wins over Notre Dame and Miami. FIU's 10
th road win marks the most victories on the road since the 2017 season.
The theme of the night for the Panthers was their pitching staff, holding the Hawkeyes to only one run on the evening and never trailed throughout the night.
Logan Runde (4-2),
Jaydon Bishop,
Zac Lampton, and Ryan Cabarcas allowed one earned run with 13 strikeouts and just one walk issued.
FIU padded both runs in the first and second inning respectively, beginning with a RBI walk for
Chase Engelhard after four Panthers walked in the inning alone.
In the second, after
Kishon Frett singled to left, later heading to third on a balk,
Brylan West shot a groundball to left for an RBI single, extending the lead to 2-0.
Iowa got a run back in the third, logging a solo shot to right field off the bat of Davis Cop.
For the Panthers,
Logan Runde made his return to the mound, making his first start since April 12
th. The Peosta, Iowa native shined on the bump, punching out three Hawkeye batters over two scoreless innings of work.
Following Runde was the lefty Bishop – after giving up a solo shot to his first batter faced, the junior retired nine of the ten batters with three strikeouts in three innings for his longest outing of his season. Lampton made his second straight appearance out the bullpen, continuing his dominant senior season, allowing one hit in 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Cabarcas was handed the ball in the eighth, inheriting a runner at third as he struck out the batter to close the frame. In the ninth, after retiring the first two batters, Iowa had three straight hits to load the bases. The redshirt senior struck out the Iowa hitter to secure his team-leading sixth save and road win for the Panthers.
