A total of nine teams beat their sport's annual multi-year national average to further FIU's commitment to academic excellence.
The nine FIU programs to best the national average for their sports included men's basketball, men's cross country, men's soccer, men's track & field, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming & diving, women's tennis and women's track & field.
The women's track and men's cross country programs finished 17 points ahead of its sport's national average to lead the way at FIU.
In addition, 14 FIU programs matched or improved their one-year score from the last year's APR release.
The 2024 report released by the NCAA features a four-year compilation of APR data from the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn one (1) point for remaining eligible and one (1) point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success.
Throughout the past 20 years, 21,365 former student-athletes have returned to the classroom after exhausting their athletics eligibility to complete degrees and earn APR points for their former team.
Nearly 11,000 of these individuals returning to graduate were former football, baseball, and men's and women's basketball student-athletes. These student-athletes are typically not counted as graduates in the federal graduation rate or Graduation Success Rate calculations.
