DALLAS, Texas- The FIU men's soccer program battled with the No. 16 SMU Mustangs Wednesday night, drawing in a 1-1 contest on the road in Dallas.

With the draw, FIU extends its unbeaten streak to four of the last five matches with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against SMU. This stretch includes a notable victory over No. 10 UCF and a draw with No. 17 Georgetown.

The Panthers struck early in the seventh minute when senior forward
Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro earned a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box. Dos Santos Monteiro calmly slotted home his third goal of the season with a low strike to the bottom left corner, giving FIU a 1-0 advantage. This marked his second penalty goal in three matches.

SMU responded in the 40th minute, leveling the match at 1-1 off a free-kick opportunity, a score that held through the remainder of the first half.

Both teams pushed in the second half, combining for 19 shots, but neither could break the deadlock, resulting in the final 1-1 scoreline.

FIU registered 11 shots throughout the match, with four on target. Dos Santos Monteiro led the offense with three shots, while defenders

Goalkeeper
Nigel Van Haveren continued his solid form, recording two key saves in the second half. His season total of 38 saves currently leads the American Athletic Conference.

FIU returns home for a two-game homestand starting on Sunday, Sept. 29, with an AAC clash against Tulsa. The match, set to kick off at 7 p.m., will also be Childhood Cancer Awareness Night, and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
