Football Drops Final Non-Conference Tilt at UConn Saturday

The Panthers closed out non-conference play at 2-2 after a defeat to the Huskies

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — FIU's football program closed out its non-conference slate with an 51-10 defeat at UConn on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (2-3, 0-1 CUSA) ended 2025 non-conference action with a 2-2 record following the 41-point defeat to the Huskies (4-2) on the road. Kejon Owens led the offense, accounting for 67 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Anthony Carrie chipped in 48 yards, of which included a 29-yard gain on an FIU scoring, to help the Panther rushing attack to 130 total yards. Keyone Jenkins completed 15 passes for 74 yards and had two turnovers, one fumble and one interception. Joe Pesansky played in relief of Jenkins late in the contest and had 100 passing yards on seven completions with two interceptions.

UConn scored twice early, finding the end zone on two of its first three offensive drives, to take a commanding 14-0 lead after one. The Huskies capitalized on a second FIU turnover to add a field goal for a 17-0 lead with 14:55 left in the second quarter.

The Panthers attempted to chip away as they drove down on their first drive of the second quarter with a 10-play, 67 yard march that was capped by a Noah Grant 26-yard field goal with 6:02 left. After both sides traded punts, FIU forced a UConn fumble with 2:46 left to take the ball back. The Panthers drove inside Husky territory, but were then stopped on fourth down.

Two plays later, UConn connected on a long passing touchdown to regain the momentum, going ahead 24-3. The Huskies tacked on a field goal before halftime and led 27-3 at the break. UConn scored 27 more points in the second half to secure the 41-point victory. FIU tacked on the final score on a nine-play, 69-yard drive led by Pesansky that culminated in a two-yard touchdown plunge.
