MIAMI – Former FIU baseball standout J.C. Escarra has been called up to the New York Yankees' Opening Day roster, the team announced Saturday afternoon.
A native of Hialeah, Fla., Escarra was added to the Yankees' 26-man roster after an impressive minor league career spanning over 450 games.
During his time at FIU (2014-17), Escarra made a significant impact, recording 20 home runs and 109 RBIs across 175 games while batting .276. His career games played rank among the top 20 in program history.
In a breakout senior season in 2017, Escarra led the Panthers with a .305 batting average, 15 home runs, and 49 RBIs, earning All-Conference USA (CUSA) Second Team honors. His performance led to his selection by the Baltimore Orioles in the 15th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
This spring, Escarra continued to impress, hitting .333 with three home runs and seven RBIs to secure his place on the Yankees' big-league roster.
When he makes his MLB debut, Escarra will become the 19th player in FIU baseball history to reach the majors. He also joins Logan Allen (Cleveland Guardians) and Austin Shenton (Seattle Mariners) as one of three former Panthers currently on a Major League 40-man roster.
