Football Concludes Spring Season with Navy-White Game on Saturday

FIU takes on Bethune-Cookman in its season and home opener on Aug. 29

MIAMI — FIU football wrapped its spring football season in style with its Navy-White Game on Saturday in front of an excited crowd at Pitbull Stadium. 

The first 'game' of the Willie Simmons regime brought the expected energy and competition to South Dade Kia Field at Pitbull Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

A few thousand Panther fans and several notable football alumni showed up to catch their first action of the 'new era' of FIU football. Current NFL players Jonnu Smith and Maurice Alexander were on hand as was NFL alumni Jonathan Cyprien. Fans were also treated to on-field access and player meet-and-greets/autograph signings postgame. 

The Navy team came away with a hard-fought victory over the White team, 7-2, in a a defensive struggle that featured five total interceptions. Navy's Devonte Lyons scored the game's lone touchdown in the third quarter following a couple big plays on the scoring drive. Newcomer Alex Perry made several catches to set up the Lyons TD and showed chemistry with quarterback Clayton DeesVictor Evans III also had a standout day with two interceptions from his defensive back position.

For the white team, Nick Watson forced a safety early to account for their two points. Quarterback Keyone Jenkins and Eric Nelson showed solid chemistry for the white team with several link-ups throughout the game.  

FIU will return to action this fall, hosting Bethune-Cookman for its season and home opener on Friday, Aug. 29. For more information and to purchase season tickets, click here
