Softball Swept by Jax State

FIU fell to Jax State, 3-1 and 7-4, on Saturday

MIAMI — FIU's softball program was downed in a doubleheader, falling 3-1 and 7-4, to Jacksonville State in Conference USA (CUSA) play on Saturday at home.

The Panthers (23-12, 5-7 CUSA) were set back by the CUSA-leading Gamecocks (26-10, 11-1 CUSA) in both games on Saturday, as Jax State secured the series sweep over FIU. Kennedy Byrd hit a two-run homer in the second game to lead the offensive effort. Brooke McNichols posted a solid pitching performance in the opening game, allowing just three runs and five hits overall.

Game One
Jax State led 3-0 after three innings, but McNichols (4-2) settled in from there, allowing just one hit for the remainder of the game. Despite McNichols' strong outing in the circle, the FIU offense mustered just three hits in the game and scored its only run in the fourth inning.

Kally Meredith collected two of the Panthers' three hits while Paige Miller accounted for the lone RBI, a groundout that scored Leah Clark

Game Two
Kennedy Byrd (7-5) started for the Panthers in Game Two and allowed a first-inning run to give the Gamecocks an early lead. Byrd put FIU back ahead in the bottom half, however, launching her seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot to put the Panthers up 2-1 after one.

Jax State responded with two runs in the second and three in the third, however, to gain full control of the game, up 6-2 after three. Grace Helbling delivered an RBI single in the sixth to cut the deficit to three, but JSU responded with a run in the top of the seventh to back up four.

FIU fought to make a comeback in its final at-bat as Cayce Kavakich singled in Leah Clark to pull back within three. The Panthers then loaded the bases with one out, but the Gamecocks retired the final two FIU hitters to secure the 7-4 win.
