JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — FIU's women's tennis program secured a 4-0 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday morning at the UNF Tennis Complex, closing out a two-match road swing.
The Panthers (7-8) opened strong with a dominant doubles performance against the Governors, claiming the point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. FIU carried that momentum into singles, earning victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 to seal the match.
In doubles play, recently named CUSA doubles team of the week,
Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn and
Aleksandra Simeva set the tone with a 6-2 win on Court 3. Austin Peay answered with a victory at No. 2 to even things at 1-1, but with the point on the line,
Katerina Mandelikova and
Viktorie Hazmukova delivered a gritty 7-6 tiebreak win on Court 1 to give FIU an early 1-0 lead.
FIU continued to roll in singles. Mandelikova struck first with a dominant 7-6, 6-0 victory at No. 1, followed by Araoz-Gosn's steady 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 to extend the lead to 3-0. With one point remaining,
Vittoria Baccino sealed the match in commanding fashion with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2.
Jelena Vico's match on Court 3 went unfinished at 7-6, 2-1, while Hazmukova led 6-4, 3-6, 3-0 on Court 5 before play was halted. Simeva was also in control on Court 6 at 7-6, 6-1 when the match was clinched.
