NEWARK, Del. — FIU's softball program dropped a back-and-forth contest to Delaware in Conference USA (CUSA) play on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 on the road.
The Panthers (18-5, 0-2 CUSA) erased an early deficit for the second-straight game against the Blue Hens (11-11, 2-0 CUSA), but late offense from Delaware proved to be the difference in the one-run defeat. Zamya McBurrows delivered an incredible day at the plate for FIU, going 3-for-3 with four RBI, including a double and a two-run homer, to lead the offensive effort. McBurrows also made an outstanding, highlight reel catch in the fifth inning from her shortstop position.
Kally Meredith, Leah Clark and Kendall Catherwood also had multi-hit performances for the Panthers. As a team, FIU had 10 hits, but left eight runners on base. Kennedy Byrd (6-2) suffered the loss for FIU, surrendering five earned runs in 6.0 innings while striking out four.
Delaware got on the board first with a three-run second to take control of the game early. FIU responded, however, with a clutch two-out, two-run double from McBurrows in the top of the third, pulling the Panthers within one. McBurrow's heroics continued in the fifth as she launched the first pitch from Delaware reliever Josie Crossman over the wall in left field for a two-run homer, giving FIU its first lead of the day, 4-3. The Blue Hens scratched out a run in the bottom half of the fifth, tying the score up at 4-4.
Despite FIU's resilience to claw back into the game, Delaware's late-inning magic was on display again as the Blue Hens plated one to take the lead in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Clark got on to leadoff the inning and then stole second, giving the Panthers a runner in scoring position with no outs. However, after back-to-back outs, Clark was called out trying to steal third, due to leaving second base early, of which secured the win for Delaware.
