BOCA RATON, Fla. — FIU's softball program was defeated by Florida Atlantic 7-1 on Wednesday evening in non-conference play.
The Panthers (28-14) fell to the Owls (27-16) in their final non-conference tilt of the season. Leah Clark's solo homer in the sixth inning, her fifth of the season, accounted for FIU's lone run.
Offensively, the Panthers had eight hits, seven singles and Clark's homer. In the circle, Megan Kruger (0-1) pitched four innings and allowed five earned runs on 72 pitches. Brooke McNichols came on in relief of Kruger to finish out the game and allowed two runs in 2.0 innings.
The game was scoreless after two innings before the Owls pushed across two in the third and added one more in the fourth. Florida Atlantic struck for three in the fifth to build a six-run cushion.
Clark answered with the solo shot in the sixth, but FIU stranded runners on first and third to end the frame. The Owls responded with one run in the bottom half to re-gain the six-run lead and the Panthers were held scoreless in their final at-bat.
