MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — FIU's women's tennis team turned in a dominant performance in a 4-0 sweep over No. 10 seed Middle Tennessee in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Adams Tennis Complex.
The No. 2 seeded Panthers set the tone early, securing the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 2. The pair of
Katerina Mandelikova and
Viktorie Hazmukova opened play with a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot, followed by
Vittoria Baccino and
Jelena Vico, who clinched the double's point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot.
FIU carried that momentum into singles play, quickly taking control across the courts.
Katerina Mandelikova extended the Panthers' lead with a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory at No. 1, while
Vittoria Baccino followed suit with another 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2.
Aleksandra Simeva sealed the match for FIU with a decisive 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6, clinching the 4-0 sweep and sending the Panthers into the semifinals.
Matches on Courts 3, 4 and 5 went unfinished, with
Jelena Vico,
Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn and
Viktorie Hazmukova each holding a one-set advantage when play was halted.
