DALLAS, Texas - Dr. Berrin Tansel, professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been recognized as FIU's Conference USA Faculty Achievement Award Winner, conference officials announced Thursday afternoon.

The award highlights the conference's outstanding faculty members and their dedication to teaching, commitment to their respective fields of study through research and devotion to making a difference through service in their campus communities.

Dr. Tansel is recognized as a top scholar worldwide, and is renowned for her careers in environmental engineering, research and educating, while ranking No. 7 worldwide in her specialty the past five years. Tansel's project focusing on closed-loop water research at the Kennedy Space Center was recognized as a project of national significance for both space travel and Earth-based conservation efforts. An author of more than 200 scientific papers and six books, Dr. Tansel has re-shaped environmental practices, informed on governmental policy decisions and prepared generations of engineers who themselves now work in the highest levels of the field. Dr. Tansel has had the honor of being elected Diplomate of the Water Resources Engineers, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, an honor reserved for only about 3 percent of the ASCE membership, and a Fellow of the Environment and Water Resources Institute.

The awards program was established by the league's presidents and chancellors to recognize exceptional contributions in teaching, research and service. Each of the 11 recipients will automatically become the institutional nominee for the CUSA Professor of the Year, which will be voted on by the institution's provosts.

"Today, we honor an exceptional group of faculty members whose dedication to teaching, innovation in research, and service to their communities elevates the mission of higher education," said Dr. Alisa White, the President of Sam Houston State University and the Chair of the CUSA Board of Directors. "The Faculty Achievement Awards reflect the meaningful and lasting contributions they bring to their institutions and beyond."
