Biography

2004-05 (Sophomore): FIU's No. 1 player all season who was ranked as high as No. 35 nationally by the ITA and checked in at No. 42 in that organization’s preseason ratings, last fall...finished with a 17-7 spring mark (20-9 overall) and was 5-7 against ranked opponents...represented the Golden Panthers at the NCAA Championships...member of the 2005 All-Sun Belt Conference Team and named the SBC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after recording a 3-0 doubles record and a 2-0 singles mark over the competition...helped FIU to its first-ever league tournament championship...twice named the conference's Player of the Week...after starting the season with a 3-3 mark, won 17 of her last 21 spring matches (.810)...biggest win of the year was a 6-1, 6-3 decision over North Carolina's Kendall Cline (then ranked No. 20)...lone NCAA Tournament decision was a three-set setback against Florida State's No. 15-ranked Mihaela Moldovan...season-best eight-match win streak from March 14-April 3 included victories over three ranked foes...also on the winning end of 18 doubles matches in 2005, helping FIU to an 18-1 mark when securing the doubles point...14 of those wins came at the No. 1 position with partner Nikkita Fountain.

2003-04 (Freshman): Stepped in at the start of the spring as the Golden Panthers' No. 1 singles player, finishing the year with a 12-6 mark...won her collegiate debut, 6-3, 6-4, versus Stetson's Milli Milovonavic and then beat No. 85-ranked Katarina Palenikova from South Alabama, 6-2, 6-0...named Sun Belt Conference Performer of the Week on March 26, after winning five-straight matches, all in straight sets...helped FIU to its first win of the spring over a ranked opponent on March 11 when she beat Karlyn Martin of No. 75 Yale...beat Laetitia Zembski of New Orleans, 7-6, 7-6, in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships...teamed with Desanka Jovanovic to finish 12-7 in doubles, 11-6 at No. 2...helped secure the doubles point with a win versus No. 35 Baylor.

Prior to FIU: Accomplished USTA/WTA tournament performer...ranked No. 472 in the world by the WTA (as of Jan. 16, 2006)...Women’s Open doubles winner (with Angela Haynes) and singles semifinalist at the 2003 Cortec Prequalifying Tournament...girls’ under-18 singles winner at the 2002 Casely Junior International and doubles winner (with Alison Hashmall) at the 2001 USTA International Hard Court Championships...reached the singles finals of the 2001 girls’ 16 USTA National Open Altamonte Springs and won the doubles championship (with Jenni-Lee Heinser)...ranked No. 23 for girls-under-16 by the USTA in 2001-02 and No. 4 in Florida in 2002.

Personal: Psychology major... member of the 2004-05 Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll...daughter of Ramon Zabala and Maria Alvarez.
