As a Senior (2013): Named to the 2012-13 SBC Academic Honor Roll for having a 3.0-3.49 GPA…Served as team captain for 2013 team…Started all 58 games, with 40 coming at second base, 17 in left field and one in right field…Recorded 14 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games…Put together a 10-game hitting streak, extending from Feb. 22 to March 8…Went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI vs. Manhattan (2/22)… His big series against the Jaspers continued, as he went 3-for-3 in the series finale with one double, one homerun, three runs and two RBI (2/24)…Homered in his second-straight game, as he went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI vs. Texas Tech (2/25)…Continued his 10-game winning streak with a 2-for-3 effort against Ole Miss (3/2)…Combined to go 5-for-9 with an RBI in the final two games of the WKU series…Scored and drove in a run in a 2-for-4 effort against Arkansas State (3/30)…Tallied a season-high three RBI vs. Florida A&M (4/2)…Accounted for two hits, including a double, and an RBI in the series opener at South Alabama (4/5)…Recorded one hit in each game of the ULM series, including an RBI in the first two games on April 12 and 13…Went 2-for-4 in each of the final two games of the Middle Tennessee State series, adding an RBI in each contest as well…Tallied his seventh double of the season at Troy (5/3)…Closed out the Troy series with a 2-for-5 performance with a triple (5/5)…Went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Senior Weekend vs. Florida Atlantic (5/16).
As a Junior (2012): Named to the 2011-12 SBC Academic Honor Roll for having a 3.0-3.49 GPA… Was the only Panther to start all 57 games during the year… Batted .294 (69-235) with five home runs, 33 RBI, 41 runs scored, nine doubles and a triple… Stole six bases in 10 attempts… Second on the team getting hit with seven pitches… Second on the team with 22 multi-hit games, including two three-hit games and a four-hit game… Had eight multi-RBI games… Had an eight-game hitting streak during the year and finished the season riding a three-game streak that carries over to 2013… Reached base in 10 consecutive games at one point in the season and finished with a three-game on base streak… Ranked in the top-5 on the team in every offensive statistical category… Made two diving catches at Arkansas State in the span of two games while filling in for an injured Panther in left field… FIU had a record of 20-14 when Shantz held down the 2nd spot in the lineup… Batted 5th in 22 games and once in the leadoff spot… The Panthers won the only game Shantz hit in the leadoff spot… Was busy in the field against Troy (4/6) racking up an individual game-high eight assists from second base… Started 56 games at second and one in left…
As a Sophomore (2011): Finished the season hitting .286 (66-for-231) while starting 59 games… Scored 37 runs while driving in 34 more with five home runs, five doubles and 86 total bases… Stole 6-of-9 bases with two sac flies and three sac bunts… Had 17 multi-hit games, including a five-hit game at UALR (4/24) where he drove in a season-high five runs with a home run and two runs scored… The five-hit game was tied with Garrett Wittels for a team-high while also tying Jabari Henry for a team-high nine total bases… Also had eight multi-RBI games… Tied for the fourth-longest hitting streak on the team with a 12-game streak (4/16-5/8)… Started 58 games at second base and one in left field… Second to Wittles with 155 assists… Really came on towards the end of the season, hitting .309 (38-of-123) with three home runs, 14 RBI and 23 runs scored in conference action… Had a walk-off single against South Alabama (4/30), helping extend an unbeaten streak, which lasted 17 games… Was 1-for-7 with an RBI in the NCAA Regionals against Maine and James Madison.
As a Freshman (2010): One of the scrappiest guys on the team, he hit .311 (28-for-90) during his freshman campaign, starting 14-of-41 games played… Hit four home runs while tallying 14 RBI and scoring 18 runs with three doubles… Was successful in his only stolen base attempt of the season… Appeared in a team-high 27 games as a sub… Had seven multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games… Ended the season on a five-game hitting streak… Started the majority of his games in left field (10) while hitting out of the two-hole in the lineup seven times… Registered his first-career hit against Maryland (2/20) on an RBI single after coming in as a defensive replacement… Had a three-hit game in his first-career start against Rutgers (3/13)… Launched his first collegiate home run against Rutgers (3/14)… Had a .333 (10-for-30) average in conference play… Hit .318 (7-for-22) in the conference tournament with two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored… Had the game-winning home run in the top of the 11th inning to give FIU an 18-16 win over FAU (5/28)… He hit his second home run of the tournament, a two-run bomb, in the first inning of the Championship Game against Troy (5/30) finishing the game 4-for-6 with two runs scored and a season-high three RBI… Had a fan club in left field at the SBC Tournament that dubbed themselves ‘The Shmitty Committee’… Hit .375 (3-for-8) while starting both games of the Coral Gables NCAA Regionals… Drove in a run and scored two more in the two games.
Prior to FIU: Played for Marc Johnson at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colo.… Was All-State his senior year in baseball and football… Hit .446 with a .526 on-base percentage, six home runs and 44 RBI.
Personal: Born August 1, 1990 in Centennial, Colo.… Son of Ted and Jeanne Shantz… Has two siblings, Katie Shantz and Cristi Camps… Given name is Tyler James Shantz… Sport management major with aspirations of working in a Major League Baseball front office… His father, Ted, played football at Adam State College… Chose FIU after receiving interest from Arizona State, Arkansas, Akron, Northern Colorado, and Pepperdine.
