Omar Borges begins his third season with FIU’s baseball staff as Player Development Coordinator.
Prior to joining FIU, Borges has been a hitting and mental coach for the last 12 years. He is the founder of Hitaway Baseball Academy, running the organization from 2007-2012. In addition, Borges is also the President of MFS Hitting Facility since 2013 and remains in that capacity to this day.
Through his work at the MFS facility in the last five years, Borges has personally coached and trained 19 players that have committed to Division I schools and multiple current and former mayor league players.
Over the past few summers, Borges has coached travel baseball for two different organizations. In 2017 and 2018, he coached the Elite Squad American team, capturing back-to-back Perfect Game World Series titles. He also coached the Elev8 Academy National team in 2019, where he had 4 players verbally commit to Division I Universities in Power Five conferences and had 3 other players selected for the USA national tryout.
As a player, Borges attended Miami Brito High School, where he was named to First Team All-County, First Team All-State, and was an All-American by Perfect Game. In his senior year he was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2002 Major League First player draft.
Borges proceeded to join the college ranks at Palm Beach Community College. He led his team in almost every hitting category and made First Team All-State. Borges then transferred to Bethune Cookman University, and played for FIU’s Head Coach Mervyl Melendez. At BCU Borges was named the top prospect of the MEAC by Baseball America and was selected to the All-Conference team.
