Aubrey Hill enters his fourth season at FIU, serving as the Panthers’ wide receivers coach. Head Coach Butch Davis announced the hiring of Hill to the FIU football staff on March 9, 2017.
Hill has been a part of three bowl appearances with FIU including the 2018 Bahamas Bowl victory over Toledo. In his first season, Hill helped FIU tie the program record for wins in a season (8), before breaking that record in 2018 with nine victories on the year.
In 2019, Hill's wide receivers gave future NFL draftee James Morgan reliable targets as the group finished near the top of the conference in a few categories. Austin Maloney ranked 17th in the nation and third in the conference for his 19.36 yards per reception, while having three wide outs rank in the Top 20 of the league for receiving yards per game in Shemar Thornton (51.4), Maloney (49.2) and Tony Gaiter IV (47.8).
During the 2018 season, Hill helped wide receivers CJ Worton, Austin Maloney, and Maurice Alexander all have standout seasons. Hill helped to successfully convert ex-quarterback Alexander into a very potent offensive weapon. The junior finished with the most all-purpose yards (824) on the team while also logging the most receptions (40) and the most total touchdowns (8). Alexander logged the second-most receiving touchdowns (5) on the team, the third-most receiving yards (474), sixth-most rushing yards (129), and the longest reception (76).
Worton and Maloney finished in the top 20 of C-USA receivers in total receiving yards with 627 and 610 respectively, while ranking fourth and fifth on the team in touchdowns with six and five respectively. Under Hill’s direction in 2018 Maloney was selected to the C-USA Honorable Mention Team as a wide receiver, and also as a kick returner after leading the team in total kick return yards and return attempts. Hill helped the FIU offense have one of the most productive seasons in program history in 2018 as they posted a school-record 450 points on the season and passed for the most yards in school history (3,194). With Hill as wide receivers coach the FIU offense also logged records for passing touchdowns (27), yards per pass (8.3), completion percentage (65.5) and passing efficiency (154.7). Hill helped the FIU offense top the C-USA in total points scored, points per game (34.6), total touchdowns (58), passing efficiency, third-down conversion percentage (46.8), and fourth-down conversion percentage (65.2).
The Panther offense saw tremendous success in 2017 as well, as FIU set single-season program records in passing yards (3,031), completion percentage (63.6%), pass efficiency (138.7) and first downs (269). FIU gained 5,100 yards of total offense in 2017, which was just 37 yards shy of setting another school record. FIU scored 333 points in 2017, which ranked second in program history for a single season. The Panthers also boasted an extremely efficient offense in the red zone, scoring on 40 of 41 attempts (97.6%) to rank first in the NCAA.
Under Hill’s guidance, five wide outs recorded at least 300 yards receiving in 2017 with Thomas Owens leading the pack after earning 887 yards for the season. Owens garnered All-CUSA honors after leading the league in receiving yards per game (98.6), which included a stretch of four-straight 100-yard games. Owen’s 887 receiving yards in 2017 ranks as the fourth-best mark in a single-season, which was 151 yards shy of T.Y. Hilton’s single-season record (1,038).
Hill comes to FIU after a brief stint at Marshall and four years as the head coach of Miami Carol City where he went 30-16. After leading the Chiefs to the 2016 Class 6A state championship - their first state championship since 2003, Hill was named the 2016 Miami Dolphins High School Coach of the year and a finalist for the 2016 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year.
He came to Miami Carol City after spending a season at the University of Florida where he served as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the Gators staff, Hill spent three seasons at the University of Miami working with the wide receivers. In 2010, he was also named the Hurricanes recruiting coordinator.
Before arriving at UM, he spent three years on the University of Pittsburgh coaching staff, where he tutored first-team All-Big East performers Greg Lee in 2005 and the tandem of Derek Kinder and freshman All-American Oderick Turner in 2006.
In 2004, Hill coached at Elon (N.C.) University as receivers coach. Prior to that, he was the receivers coach at Duke for five seasons and also served in a pair of NFL coaching internships.
Hill played and coached in Steve Spurrier's "Fun 'n Gun" offense at Florida. He was a standout receiver at Florida from 1991-94 before moving into the coaching ranks. As a player at Florida, he helped the Gators to a four-year record of 43-10-1 (.806) and three SEC championships. He totaled 86 receptions and 18 touchdowns during his career and caught a touchdown every 4.78 catches, the third best TD ratio in Gators history. He was a team captain as a senior in 1994.
Following his playing career, Hill served as a Florida graduate assistant from 1996-98. In his first season as an assistant, Florida captured the national championship with a 12-1 mark, capped by a 52-20 victory over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.
Hill owns two degrees from Florida, including a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science and a master's degree in leisure and sports management.
