Jason Brooks begins his fourth season with FIU football in 2016, serving as an assistant with the defensive back and special teams. Brooks began the year working with the tight ends.
 
Brooks took over the tight ends corps in 2015 that was led by All-Conference USA preseason and Mackey Award Watch List selection Jonnu Smith. Smith, who enters his senior season, finished last year fourth on the team in receiving pulling in 36 passes for 397 yards, and four touchdowns, in eight games. Joining Smith on the Mackey Award Watch List was Ya’Keem Griner, who posted 21 catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns in seven games played.
 
During the 2014 season, FIU’s secondary led a defense that finished second the nation in turnovers forced (33), including 19 fumble recoveries. Of those 19 fumble recoveries, eight took place in the red zone. The 33 turnovers rank No. 3 all-time at FIU, while the 19 fumble recoveries rank No. 2 all-time. FIU recorded multiple turnover games eight times, including a school-record six turnovers twice (vs. Wagner; at UAB). Those turnovers ultimately led to 105 points for the Panthers.
 
The Panthers’ defense also did their part to score points during the season, recording six defensive touchdowns (No. 2 in the nation). FIU had five pick sixes (school record) and one fumble recovery for a touchdown
 
Brooks arrived at FIU in 2013 after spending the four seasons in the National Football League with the Baltimore Ravens, the Super Bowl XLVII Champions.
 
With Baltimore, Brooks served under Head Coach John Harbaugh as an assistant to the offense, offensive quality control and offensive assistant. His responsibilities also included the coordination and coaching of the Ravens defensive scout team, assisting with the special teams scout squad, film breakdown and self-scouting reports.
 
As well as other duties assigned, Brooks worked first-hand in the coaching of the wide receivers in 2009 and 2011 and running backs in 2010 and 2012.
 
Prior to the Ravens, Brooks was the wide receivers coach in 2008 at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.
 
At Norwich, Brooks coached in a no-huddle offense, as well as coached the gunners on the punt team and corners on the punt block team, assisted in coordinating the scout kickoff coverage and kickoff return teams, coordinated and assisted in coaching the defensive scout team.
 
Brooks also served the Miami Dolphins in parts of 2007-08 as a scouting assistant. In that capacity, he was in charge of video library maintenance, logging all college and NFL film. He also utilized the team’s video scouting tools to create film study for the player personnel department and coaching staff.
 
To start the 2007 season, he worked at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant defensive backs coach following a season as a student assistant coach at Middle Tennessee.
 
With Middle Tennessee, Brooks worked with the running backs and special teams units. He was part of the staff that guided the Blue Raiders to the 2006 Sun Belt Championship and bid to play in the 2006 Motor City Bowl.
 
Brooks graduated from Middle Tennessee in 2006 where he earned a bachelor's of science in physical education, with an emphasis in athletic coaching. He also attended Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland Ohio.
 
Brooks' father, Clarence, is presently the senior defensive assistant for the Baltimore Ravens, where he has worked since 2005. Brooks, Sr., has more than three decades of coaching experience with the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns and on the college level with Massachusetts, Arizona and Syracuse.
 
Clarence and Jason were the first father and son to coach together on a Super Bowl winning franchise when the Ravens defeated the 49ers in 2013.
 
Brooks and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Aviana, and a son Avery.
