Terrence Robertson was named assistant coach/recruiting coordinator in February 2022.
Robertson has aided FIU over the past two seasons as the Panthers continue to show consistent improvement. In 2023, FIU notched 13 wins and advanced to the CUSA Semifinal at the CUSA Championships for the first time since 2018.Â
The Panthers were recognized with three selections to the All-CUSA roster in First Teamers Jade Sadeiko and Yasso Amin and freshman team member Gianna Tagoa'i.Â
Â
Robertson joins FIU after spending the last four seasons at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where he helped guide the Retrievers to 44 wins and back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. Under Robertson’s tutelage, UMBC won both the 2020 and 2021 America East Championships, en route to capturing the program’s first two NCAA berths since 1998.
Â
During his final campaign in Baltimore, Robertson played a pivotal role on the 2021 America East Coaching Staff of the Year that lead the Retrievers to a perfect 12-0 mark in America East Conference play. UMBC was defeated by NCAA National Semifinalist, Pittsburgh in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Championship.
Â
During the Spring 2021 season, Robertson helped lead UMBC to an 11-4 overall mark. With six new players, including five freshmen and a nearly entirely new starting lineup, UMBC was picked to finish near the bottom of the standings in a preseason coaches poll.
Â
The Retrievers shocked everyone by going 9-3 in conference play and earning a share of the America East regular season title for the first time in program history. The dream season concluded when the Retrievers fell in straight sets to Pepperdine during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Robertson was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as one of its 2020 Thirty Under 30 Award winners. The award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport.
Â
Under Robertson’s guidance, UMBC excelled on and off the court. Headlined by Loren Teter’s historic 2021 campaign that landed her on the 2021 AVCA East Coast All-Region team, nine Retrievers earned All-America East honors and seven were named to the America East All-Rookie team. Teter became the first Retriever in program history to earn AVCA All-Region honors and the second player to be named America East Defensive Specialist of the Year.
Â
Also during the 2021 season, Mia Bilusic was named America East Rookie of the Year while Andjelija Draskovic earned America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.
Â
UMBC also excelled in the classroom under Robertson with a total of seven Retrievers being named to the America East All-Academic team over his tenure. For the 2018-19 academic year, the Retrievers earned their first-ever American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. Emily Ferketic led the academic charge by taking home the league's Elite 18 Award, which symbolizes the top performing student-athlete in the championships. Ferketic was a physics major and maintained a 4.0 grade-point average.
Â
During his tenure at UMBC, Robertson’s main responsibilities included being the offensive and recruiting coordinator. The 2020 and 2021 recruiting classes each saw four different Retrievers earn All-America East honors in their first season at UMBC including back-to-back Rookie of the Year awards.
Â
In the final two years of coordinating the UMBC offense, the Retriever led the America East in hitting percentage and assist per set. During the 2021 campaign, UMBC also topped the America East in kills per set and opponent service aces per set.
