FIU sophomore Christine Seredni played the best tennis of her young intercollegiate career this weekend at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships reaching the consolation singles semifinals round.
Seredni, a native of Glen Allen, Va., and transfer from J. Sargent Reynolds C.C., advanced to the semifinals after a 6-3, 6-1 victory over South Florida's Allyn Mueller in the quarters. But Seredni couldn't master Mueller's teammate, Ecaterina Vasenina, falling in the semis, 6-0, 6-3.
Golden Panther senior Maria Vallasciani battled Georgia Tech's Hillary Davis, in their consolation quarterfinals match-up, but in the end, it was Davis who prevailed, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
FIU's lone remaining entry at Georgia Tech's Tom Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, was its main draw sixth-seeded doubles team of Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo, but they too were eliminated, losing to the University of Miami's third-seeded Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu, 8-5.
