FIU Drops 2-1 Decision to Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. ? The FIU women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to host Arkansas State in a Sun Belt Conference game on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.

With the win, ASU improved to 7-10-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the Sun Belt while FIU fell to 2-11-2 and 1-5-0 in the league.

FIU's Charissa Gingerich (Cape Coral, Fla.) scored the first goal of the game when she booted in a rebound off her own shot in the 12th minute, giving FIU an early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Indians responded quickly as Jen Widener hit Shawna Sparks on a cross to the rightside of the penalty box in the 14th minute. Sparks sent the ball into the back of the net to even the score.

In the closing moments of the first half, Sparks struck again, scoring off a through pass from Gwen Burgess in the 45th minute.

In an attempt to tie the contest, FIU outshot Arkansas State 12-5 in the second half; however, FIU was held scoreless.

Up next, the Golden Panthers will end its regular season with a pair of Sun Belt Conference foes at FIU Stadium, Denver on Friday (Oct. 31) at 6 p.m. and North Texas, next Sunday (Nov. 2).
