FIU ends season falling to North Texas, 2-1

Final Box Score

Melinda Pina's goal in the 70th minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled North Texas (12-5-1, 6-1-1 SBC) to a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer victory Sunday afternoon in Miami.

After NT grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a Marilyn Marin goal, the Golden Panthers tied the match six minutes into the second half when Kristy Caunter picked up a loose ball out in front of the net and scored from short range, off an assist by Monica Savage.

FIU (2-13-2, 1-7-0) outshot North Texas, 16-9, and had several opportunities to score more, but came away empty. With two minutes to play in the first half, Renee Cagnina banged a ball off the post, which was collected by Charissa Gingerich whose rebound attempt went just wide.

Later, with less than a minute to play in the match, FIU's Tamara Kochen put in a shot that went over the head of NT goalkeeper Briana Buchanan, but the ball rattled off the cross bar and the threat ended.

Golden Panthers goalkeeper Juliana Gomez finished with four saves.

The loss concluded the season for FIU.
