Final Box Score
Scoring its first three goals of the season, the Florida International University women's soccer team also netted its first victory of the year, a 3-0 decision over Charleston Southern Sunday afternoon at University Park.
FIU (1-4) had failed to notch a goal in four games, but sophomore defender Carly Goldich changed all that with a goal in the eighth minute. Assisted by a cross from sophomore forward Elizabeth Durozel, Goldich knocked home what ended up being the deciding point from the left side of the box, her first goal as a Golden Panther.
The Golden Panthers got solid scoring opportunities much of the afternoon, and their work finally paid off with another goal in the seventy-fifth minute. Freshman midfielder Valarie Patrick launched a long pass from the back line, which senior midfielder Carmen Lopez gathered in on top of the defense. She then beat the goalie one-on-one for her first goal of the season.
The 2-0 margin gave FIU some much needed breathing room, but the Golden Panthers were not done scoring. In the eighty-fifth minute, Patrick took in a chip pass from junior midfielder Charissa Gingerich at midfield before kicking a long pass down the right sideline to junior forward Tamara Kochen. Kochen then sidestepped two defenders and put the ball home for her first goal as a
Golden Panther and a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Panther defense, which Friday allowed no regulation goals, accomplished the feat again, blanking the Bucs for 90 minutes Sunday. The match also saw 29 fouls and four cards given out.
Florida International next faces Stetson at 4:00 p.m. on Friday in DeLand, Fla.
