FIU Falls to No. 12 Florida, 4-1

MIAMI – After battling to a 1-1 tie in the first half, No. 12 Florida scored three goals in the second half within an eight-minute span en route to a 4-1 victory over the FIU women’s soccer team.

With the contest knotted at 1-1, Florida’s Stephanie Freeman scored her first of two goals firing a shot past a sliding Golden Panthers’ Madeline Gannon at the 69:22 mark to give UF a 2-1 lead. Less than three minutes later, the Gators’ Nikila Walker extended the margin to 3-1 with a goal from 16 yards out. Freeman closed out the scoring with her second goal at 76:11 for the final margin.

In the opening half, the Gators’ took on an early lead at 13:25 when Christine Johnson capitalized on a feed from Ashley Kellgren and Daniela Sanchez. FIU took advantage of their lone shot of the opening 45 minutes with the equalizer at the 42:09 mark as junior Chanelle Crosby fed a pass to junior Janet Ligouri, who found the back of the net to tie the contest.

For the match, Florida outshot the Golden Panthers 18-2 with Ligouri and Crosby recording the lone shots for FIU. In addition, FIU goalkeepers Madeline Gannon (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Carly Agro (Oakville, Ontario) were challenged throughout the contest, combining to make five saves.

Next on the schedule for FIU is a trip to the Lone Star state against Texas on Friday, Sept. 3 and Texas State on Sunday, Sept. 5.
