FIU Loses 2-0 to Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? For the second-straight match, it was the offensive attack in the second half by the opponents that led to a loss for the FIU women's soccer team. On Sunday, host Western Kentucky scored twice to hand the Golden Panthers their fourth-straight loss.

The loss drops FIU to 3-7-4 and 1-4-1 in Sun Belt Conference play; meanwhile, Western Kentucky raises its record to 5-6-3 on the season and 3-1-1 in conference action.

The two teams battled thru a scoreless first half as WKU got on the board in the second half on a header by Christi Banas in the 57th minute put the host Lady Toppers ahead 1-0. Nearly 20 minutes later, WKU's Lauren Wilson scored to put the Lady Toppers up 2-0.

Also, in the second half, the intensity of the match picked up as 23 fouls were called including five yellow cards - four of which were called on the Golden Panthers.

WKU managed to outshoot FIU, 10-7 in the win; plus, they held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. A pair of goalkeepers for FIU - Laura Snell and Madeline Gannon - each made two saves and allowed a goal in the loss. Snell earned the start as the she played the first 68:31 and Gannon played the final 21:29. The Lady Toppers' Meredith Goodson played all 90 minutes and made five saves for the shutout.

FIU will look to snap its losing skid on Friday, Oct. 21 at home against South Alabama at 6 p.m. as part of a soccer doubleheader at University Park. Following the women's match, the men will host South Carolina in Conference USA play.
