MIAMI ? Heather Hutyra of North Texas found herself wide open as she scored the lone goal as the visiting Mean Green defeated FIU, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at University Park.
The Golden Panthers (3-5-4, 1-2-1 Sun Belt Conference) were on the offensive in the opening minutes of the second half as they fired the first five shots of the second 45 minutes. After a Janet Liguori shot went wide, the Mean Green worked the ball down the field. A minute later, UNT forward Jaime Yates lofted a pass across the goal to an open Hutyra, who put the ball into the back of the net for the goal in the 61st minute. The Mean Green improve to 9-2-2 overall, 4-0 in conference action.
Opportunities for the equalizer presented itself for FIU with shots by freshman Shakenia Bush and senior Tamara Kochen; however, both shots went high. Kochen had a match-high four shots in the loss for the Golden Panthers. The next opportunity came in the later minutes of the contest; however, they were called for offsides. North Texas goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made a match-high six saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
Next, FIU will return to the road for the final time in the 2005 regular season as they take on Middle Tennessee on Friday, Oct. 14 at 4:30 p.m. (EST) and Western Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
